The Mahatma Gandhi Park is a reason why Kollam Beach is a favourite among children. A 10-metre-tall statue of a mermaid is now a ‘selfie point’ for visitors. Canal cruises to a nearby island village last for about four hours and are an incredible once-in-a-lifetime experience. Kollam beach was once a buzz of activity with Chinese ships being anchored here and traders visiting on a frequent basis. Churches and forts from the 18th century serve as reminders of the Portuguese and Dutch reign over the area. Kollam beach also has a lighthouse and a marine aquarium.
