Achankovil refers to the "shrine of Achan, the supreme deity." Achankovil Sastha Temple is one of the five significant temples in Kerala dedicated to Lord Ayyappan. The other well-known Lord Sastha temples are those at Kulathupuzha, Aryankavu, Sabarimala and Kanthamala. The deity is here depicted as a family man; unlike in other Ayyappan temples, he is shown with his two wives, Pushkala and Purna.
Many people come here in the belief that the temple can heal snake bites. The Ayyappan idol here holds a container of ‘theertha’, or holy water, and ‘chandanam, or sandalwood paste, both of which are thought to be effective in treating snake bites. This revered shrine is located next to the lovely Achankovil River inside a dense forest. The temple is situated almost 950 metres above sea level. Having Tamil Nadu across the border means the festivals and rituals held at the Achankovil temple on this side also have Tamil influences.
This temple differs from other Ayyappan temples in that it permits the entry of females over the age of 10 to enter the temple and climb the 18 sacred steps. The temple holds its annual festival for 10 days during the Malayalam month of Dhanu (December–January).
